Why book a cake smash session with Ollie & George Photography?
I have been photographing cake smash sessions since 2012 and they are my most booked session, back then no one really knew what they were but I’d seen a number of American photographers do them and thought they looked like so much fun! If you’ve not come across a cake smash before then you’re in for a treat. One year olds can be tricky to photograph, they just do not want to sit still for more than 30 seconds, if that… the introduction of a cake encourages them to sit for a little longer and they have a fabulous cake to interact with, some interact more than others, some completely go to town and smash it up which is immense fun whilst others take their time and are a lot more delicate….
Booking your cake smash session
If you’re thinking about booking a cake smash for your little ones birthday get in touch and I can check availability for you. I usually suggest either booking your session a few weeks before their birthday so that you have the images for the big day or to have it during their birthday week to make it part of the celebrations. The best time of day is either during their ‘happy’ time or after a nap.
How far ahead do I need to book?
Cake smash sessions usually need to be booked a minimum of two weeks in advance, for a Saturday session please contact me as soon as possible to check availability as they book up well in advance.
before your session
A few weeks before your session I’ll be in touch so that we can discuss the cake smash set up, some families have a particular theme in mind and we can work with that or if you just have a colour that you like we’ll come up with a set up and work on that with you to make sure you love how everything looks. I have a variety of tutus, rompers, vests, nappy covers with matching bow ties and some hats/crowns that are all available for you to use as well as a variety of props. You are also able to choose the colours for your cake, either a giant cupcake or a single tier cake, I’m always on hand to help if you need some guidance on what goes together etc.
The cake smash session is actually three sessions in one…we start with a mini portrait session, just 5-10 minutes of your little one, in an outfit that you bring, on a plain background, these are perfect for updating your baby’s photographs as well as to help baby settle in to their surroundings, some take longer than others, there’s no rush. Sessions last from 30-90 minutes depending on the session type and the baby on the day. Some children take a little longer than others to settle but I don’t rush them, it’s all new and can be a little overwhelming…I do have a few tricks to help them settle and feel comfortable with me and the camera.
After the portraits we get baby ready for the main event, the cake smash…I have a good variety of outfits for both boys and girls or you are welcome to bring your own. Personalised vests are very popular at the moment, I can recommend Two Tiny Tribes in Preston for vests, I’ve seen how well these vests are made, they’re very lovely. Sessions are personalised to your colours/scheme which we will discuss on booking.
Once the cake has been smashed it’s splash time! a little tin tub with bubbles, this helps to clean them up and is great for capturing some splashy smiles. Almost all babies LOVE this part!
After your session
At the end of your cake smash session we ill book your viewing and ordering appointment which will usually take place within two weeks of your session. At your viewing and ordering appointment you will view your professionally edited images on a large screen and you are then able to select the images that you would like with your package. A full price list is sent to you before booking your session so you are fully aware of the costs and there are no hidden charges, this includes costs of digital packages, wall art, and baby books.
If you have selected a package that includes prints these will usually be available to collect from the studio within two weeks, some products take a little longer but most are here within 2-3 weeks.
What if my baby doesn’t like the cake
It happens! Not all babies like the taste/texture of the cake however over the years I’ve learnt a number of tricks to help them enjoy the session so that your photo shoot is a success. It’s always a good idea to do some messy play with your baby before hand.
My baby has allergies can they still have a cake smash?
This really depends on your child’s allergies, please contact me with details of your child’s allergies before booking so that I can discuss with my baker. Some allergies are possible (dairy) whilst others may mean that you will need to provide the cake. Your child’s safety and welfare is my, and my bakers, top priority.
My child is turning two, can they have a cake smash
Yes! More and more families are opting to do a cake smash for their child’s 2nd birthday.
